Crowds out to honour the Few

CROWDS lined the streets of Banbury for a parade of military personnel and civic leaders to mark the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The major Second World War battle for control of Britain’s skies ended in defeat for the German Luftwaffe.

On Sunday the Air Training Corps band led the parade from Banbury Town Hall to St Mary’s Church for a service.

Among those taking part was William Holmes, 90, from Enstone, who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He said of the parade: “It used to be organised by the Banbury branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, of which I am president, but it got a bit much for us so the district council took it over which ensures it will go on. The atmosphere was very good.”
