Charles joins the 100 club

AN Oxford care home now has a trio of centenarians after a retired electrical shop owner celebrated his birthday yesterday. Charles Lambert is the latest to join Lady Nuffield Care Home’s 100 club.

Other residents at the Banbury Road home to have received a telegram from the Queen are Ruby Plummer, who turned 100 in April, and Doreen Ditchburn, who is 104.

Born in London, Mr Lambert moved to Oxford after serving in the RAF for six years during the Second World War. He ran his Lambert Electricals shop in Banbury Road for 30 years, before it moved to St Giles.

Mr Lambert retired aged 76 in 1987, and always kept himself busy working on his garden before he moved to Lady Nuffield four years ago. Mr Lambert, whose wife Joan died in 2000, has two sons Simon, 51, and Jerry, 48.

Mr Lambert said: “I don’t smoke and I don’t drink and I have two sons who come in every evening and do the Daily Telegraph cryptic crossword with me, which keeps my brain active.

“I definitely don’t feel 100.”
