Spires decision

The fate of a proposed £8.2m business centre for the Oxford Spires Academy is due to be decided tomorrow night.

East area planning committee councillors will decide whether to permit the Reuben Business Centre with ICT suites, a laboratory, sixth-form centre and a 330-seat lecture theatre.

Planning officers have recommended approval.

The meeting at Oxford Town Hall starts at 6pm.

None of this will radically change the key education issues relating to the school children and students involved, the truancy and non-interest in secondary education, and the socio-economic issues involved - and most importantly for secondary level students of all ages, that an emphasis on business studies will not provide them with the breadth in education which they need to help them with post-academic life. Nor are these 'academic boutiques' and 'designer colleges' little more than the quasi-private education sector trying to capitalise and take advantage of public/state funding, AKA the way the Tories want to see more and more support for private healthcare, at the expense of the NHS, and yet with public money underpinning commercial and shareholder profits.
