Headington barn and stables put up for sale by council

A STONE barn and stables in Headington have been put up for sale by Oxford City Council.

Anyone interested in purchasing the Bury Knowle stables will have to pay in the region of £450,000.

The buildings, which the city council has described as redundant, are more than 150 years old and are currently used by the council for storage.

But planning permission has been given to turn them into three two bedroom houses with space for car parking.

A previous planning application to the city council’s own planning department was submitted last year but withdrawn pending comments by English Heritage.

City council officers said the conversion of the building would be a “viable conservation of this under-used building”.

The buildings are part of Bury Knowle House which was built in around 1800, though the outbuildings are thought to have been added later.

In 1930 the city council bought the entire Bury Knowle estate for more than £11,000 and turned the grounds into a public park.

Estate agents Kemp & Kemp describe the stone barn as “magnificent”.

Should be kept for public use - after all, we own them! How about we sell off Oxford City Council? My bid, 1p.

Yes, bizarre that potential asset is sold off for developer gain when we have a shortage of social and affordable homes. Without an effective fiscal policy, once sold that location value is lost forever, to be pocketed as a private revenue. Even if you can't afford the construction costs yourself, you could lease the land or put it in a trust.
