Long-stay charges to be decided today

PLANS to charge for long stay parking at the Thornhill and Water Eaton park and ride sites are due to be decided today.

Oxford County Council officers have recommended the proposals are approved, despite scores of objections.

The council wants to introduce a £3 charge for anyone parking for more than 11 hours up to 24 hours.

Each subsequent day would then cost £3, with a maximum overall stay of 72 hours.

The council also wants to increase the amount motorists who overstay their welcome are fined from £40 to £100.

The charges are being introduced to plug a £150,000 funding gap in the council’s budget.

A report to cabinet says 111 responses were received after a consultation into the plans was launched.

The council cabinet is due to make a decision at a meeting at 2pm today.

many people who use thornhill will stop parking there at the introduction of these charges, as they work in london, or at heathrow, and away more than 11 hours. this seems unfair to those who are just trying to earn a living. the harsh reality is that these people will just go and park elsewhere, probably sandhills, and then we will see residents over there complaining about blocked driveways etc. these commuters are already paying up to £1600/year to get to work by coach, so an extra £3/day will really hit them hard. also, many people who use these 2 sites work locally at the hospitals, so an additional cost is going to hit them hard too. many nurses, doctors etc do long shifts, so will incur charges, and that seems unfair. i would suggest a larger fee, for any car that stays over 24 hours, rather than using 11 hours as the basis of charging. many of those cars parked there have been there days on end, whilst the owners are away on holiday. if these new charges come in, can we also have new powers for the security team to put tickets on people who do not use the marked bays, and park blocking others.

An excellent comment Davyboy.

I would make the fine for parking outside a marked bay more than the proposed £100.

Yep makes sense, over £100 fine for parking over a white line, but only £80 fixed penalty for punching somebody in George St on a friday night. You agree with Davy that £3 will cause hardship for workers, yet advocate a massive fine for a slight transgression.
