Rail franchise

The Department for Transport has confirmed it will not be extending the Great Western franchise while a review is carried out over the West Coast main line franchise.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the department was negotiating with Virgin Rail to extend the West Coast deal by up to 13 months after the bidding process for a new franchise was challenged by Virgin Trains boss Sir Richard Branson.

Four companies are bidding for the Great Western franchise, which runs out next July.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it - or is this just another case of the Tory-led Coalition trying to 'milk' something which appears to be working? What beats me, is why Labour never re-nationalised the railways, during its 13 years in government - though said it would before Blair came to reign, and now seems to be intimating that 'Labour would do things differently' ....? Yeah, like making the country bankrupt, like they did by pumping £billions of public money into private-sector banking.
