TORY MP Cheryl Gillan met with London Underground Ltd (LUL) bosses this week to discuss recent cuts in services from Chesham, Amersham and Chalfont stations.

The Chesham and Amersham MP invited tube chiefs to her House of Commons office on Monday following complaints from constituents.

Mrs Gillan, who was joined by fellow Tory MP Richard Page (South West Hertfordshire), described the meeting as 'positive and fruitful' and said a number of assurances were made.

Two hourly services from Amersham were scrapped in May. The move upset many rail users and many accused London Underground of failing to properly consult with passengers before the timetable was changed.

After the meeting the MP said there was reassurance in the fact that LUL admitted it did not publicise timetable changes clearly.

Mrs Gillan also got confirmation from LUL that there are no plans to axe the Chesham connection on the Metropolitan Line.

However, she added: "London Underground Ltd does not have enough resources to run all the levels and depths of services that they would like."

Metropolitan Line managers are now carrying out a three month evaluation of how well the timetable changes have served to cut congestion on the line and increase train punctuality.

A review of services is planned for September 2002.

Mrs Gillan said: "The first indications are that the changes have brought about an improvement in the overall quality of service. We shall be keeping a close eye on the outcome of the evaluation on behalf of all our constituents."
