SHOCKED commuters watched in horror as a man died after stepping off a station platform into the path of an oncoming express train.

The tragedy happened just before 8am at the Haddenham and Thame Parkway station on Tuesday, while travellers were waiting for a train.

The man was hit by the 6.30am Birmingham Snow Hill to Marylebone service and has not yet been identified.

Duty Inspector Jim Little, of the British Transport Police, said: "The train stopped about a quarter of a mile down the track after hitting the man and we were called at around 8am.

"The emergency services attended and began taking steps to remove the body from the tracks, determining the man's identity and informing the next of kin. It was confirmed that the death was not suspicious and the man's identity will be released as soon as possible."

The station was closed for several hours while the incident was dealt with by the emergency services.

Passengers and the two drivers on the Chiltern Railways train were offered care and counselling after the accident.
