BOREHAM WOOD chairman Danny Hunter has finally confirmed that George Borg will not be their manager next season, after the former Aldershot Town manager back-tracked on an agreement in order to take over as coach at newly-promoted Hornchurch.

Hunter said that while everything had been agreed financially, the lure of the Premier Division eventually swayed Borg, who Hunter says "would have been perfect for us."

The chairman is also disappointed with the way Hornchurch handled the matter, saying that, although he knew Borg had been approached by Hornchurch, he was still expecting at least a courtesy call from the Urchins.

"We've already been inundated," Hunter said. "I've had phone calls from dozens of managers, probably 80 per cent of which are at another club. If we wanted to take the matter further we would speak to their club first."

Be that as it may, it still leaves Wood relegated and managerless: "We'll have someone in place by pre-season," Hunter insisted.

A possible return for Mickey Engwell was emphatically ruled out though: "He had a shot and he wasn't good enough. He lost the dressing room."

Engwell will not be back as a player either, although his former co-manager Lee Harvey could return to the fold. He will no doubt see many new faces should he do so. Six of the current squad have signed new contracts, but, for many, the future is uncertain.

"The players that got us relegated are no good to man nor beast," Hunter said.
