A Government minister says he is having "second thoughts" about removing beds at Orpington Hospital.
John Hutton, Minister of State for the Department of Health, has written to Orpington MP John Horam, saying the provision of beds at the community hospital is being discussed.
Mr Horam wrote to the minister after launching a campaign with Bromley Comm-unity Care Protection Group to save the beds earmarked for closure when the new Farnborough Hospital opens in April 2003.
So far, he has received support from 2,000 residents and councillors, GPs and consultants are among those backing Bromley Community Care Protection Group .
Mr Horam said: "The letter from the minister confirms the original plan was for Orpington Hospital to become a Monday to Friday base for out-patients, rehabilitation and diagnostic services and, therefore, beds would no longer be needed.
"However, the letter recognises there must now be an increase to satisfy local health needs."
The final decision about beds at Orpington Hospital will be made by Bromley Primary Care Trust on May 30.
