In one of my occasional ventures into Private Eye territory — and with Lord Gnome’s trademark reversed captions — I today offer what seems to me to be a remarkable lookalike.

As soon as I saw last week’s preview article by Giles Woodforde about English Touring Theatre’s production of Noël Coward’s Tonight at 8.30, I marvelled at the presence in the cast of the Leader of the Opposition.

Of course, Ed Miliband isn’t really going to be strutting the stage of Oxford Playhouse. The actor concerned is Shereen Martin, who is pretty nearly his double. Perhaps this will prove a bit distracting for me when I see the production tonight.

Meanwhile, Mr Miliband can console himself with the thought that should his political career not prosper — which is looking increasingly likely — he can perhaps earn a crust as a thesp. The title role in Brandon Thomas’s Charley’s Aunt should do nicely.
