ARCHAEOLOGISTS were last night investigating historic human remains unearthed at an Oxford college.

A skeleton and a bullet were dug up from a quad at Wadham College in Parks Road on Wednesday after builders made the discovery.

Thames Valley Police contacted experts from Cotswold Archaeology based in Cirencester to date the bones.

Because they are more than 100 years old police are not treating the discovery as suspicious.

Wadham College student Isaac Delestre, who took the picture above, said: “It caused quite a stir, there are all sorts of stories going around.

“There are people saying the skeleton and skull is riddled with bullet holes and things. We didn’t know at first it was so old though.

“It would be quite interesting to know what happened and why they were buried there.”

The 20-year-old English student said he saw the commotion but not the actual skeleton. He said: “The bones were found under the flagstones and the police came down to the college and taped it off.”

The 403-year-old college is thought to be next to an old burial ground.

Police cordoned off the site on Wednesday for five hours.
