CHILDREN at an Oxford primary school were delighted when a book came to life before their eyes.

Author Mary Stokes White, from Marston, visited St Nicholas School, off Raymond Road, as she donated 500 copies of her book Major, the Oxford Dog to pupils.

She brought her wire-haired dachsund on whom the tale is based, to mark the start of its book week.

Gitta Ambuhl, seven, said: “I loved to meet the character from the book.”

Aysha Ahmed, seven, added: “It was a real book because we met the dog.”
