COUNTY highways boss David Nimmo Smith has ordered the permanent closure of a controversial junction on the A40.

A gap in the central reservation of the road at Risinghurst has been temporarily closed, but now it will be sealed off for good.

When it was open, the gap served as a way for drivers coming from the Green Road roundabout to turn right into Collinwood Road, and a way for those leaving the estate to turn right on to the eastbound carriageway.

Traffic officers had recommended that the access point should remain closed.

It comes after calls were made for traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing across the A40 at Risinghurst.

Mr Nimmo Smith, speaking at a meeting at County Hall on Thursday, ordered a review to work out if a crossing was possible.

He said: “I am aware that having closed off this exit means people wanting to go to London will have to go the long way around.

“This was closed because there had been problems with vehicles turning right out of Collinwood Road.”
