This is what Grove Station could look like if it is re-opened for trams or trains.

Oxfordshire County Council leader Ian Hudspeth was in Wantage last night to set out his vision for transport in and around the town.

The Conservative councillor, who held a public meeting at The Beacon, has suggested that he might turn the former station into a tram hub if Network Rail doesn’t re-open it for trains.

It is part of his Connecting Oxfordshire vision which will feed into the new local transport plan which council officials are drawing up.

Absolutely ridiculous! What a total waste of money even thinking about it! Grove station will never reopen - the line carries main line (express style) trains only - they will not want to stop there! Let's stop wasting money even pretending and commissioning pretty pictures and get down to basics. The station is so far from Grove (even further from the proposed new development) that most people would need to drive to get there! People want roads and want to use their cars - it's the only form of public transport (except expensive taxis) that actually works it gets us door to door! How about making the A34 a 3 lane motoroway - the A338 a dual carriageway - the A420 a dual carriageway all the way - that would fix it!

It wouldn't be the "fast" trains that would stop there - it would be the "slows" - there are 4 tracks there so the "slow" trains can quite readily stop whilst the "fast" services go straight through.

It would be ideal really. Particularly if a new ring road were to be around west side of Grove to open up the area to new development with cycle and pedestrian friendly routes to the new station.

And when all the extra lanes fill up in 2-3 years like they usually do - what then?

I'm not saying Grove Station is the answer but going back to 1980s transport policy definitely isn't!

This, not more roads, has already been the norm across the developed world for at least 20 years. The UK is a generation behind the times and has much catching up to do.
