RESIDENTS got their first chance to give their views on new plans for a redeveloped Westgate Shopping Centre.

Developer Westgate Oxford Alliance has opened up a shop in the complex to display its new images of what the finished scheme could look like.

It will be showing the plans, as the final part of a two-stage consultation following one in April, from 10am to 5.30pm today, tomorrow and Monday.

South Hinksey grandmother-of-nine Linda Slater said: “On the whole I like it. I went to the exhibitions in April as well and left some comments and it does actually look like they have listened to what people said.”

Under the revised designs there would be 70 new shops, a rooftop terrace and a two-storey basement car park with about 1,000 spaces. Central to the proposals is also a large John Lewis store in a new south arcade.

Mrs Slater said she had last commented on the proposed views in Castle Street last time.

“I was worried that it looked a bit bleak, but I notice now they have changed the designs slightly and added in some more patterns to brighten it up a bit.

“I love Oxford, so you don’t want some monstrosity being built in the middle of it.”
