A TEENAGER has gone on trial at Oxford Crown Court accused of breaking her baby daughter’s leg.
Jade Collison, of Juniper Close, Banbury, has pleaded not guilty to one count of inflicting grievous bodily harm.
Prosecutor Sam Mainds said the 19-year-old was alleged to have committed the offence during January 2013. She also denies one count of inflicting actual bodily harm on her daughter.
Mr Mainds said Collison took the infant, then six months old, to the Horton General Hospital in Banbury on January 29. The child had bruises on both sides of her face, which her mother said were caused when the child banged it against her cot.
Mr Mainds said a doctor became suspicious when Collison appeared to change her account of where she was when the accident happened.
An x-ray revealed a fracture to the baby’s left fibula, the barrister said. Collison had initially said she did not know how it happened, but, said Mr Mainds: “She caused it herself.”
He said she later changed her story to police, saying her daughter got her foot stuck in the cot bars, then claimed her then boyfriend had stepped on the child by accident.
The trial continues.
