A MAN was last night fighting for his life after falling from a bridge and then colliding with a vehicle.

Thames Valley Police said he fell from the Sandford Road bridge – between Oxford’s Heyford Hill roundabout and the Kassam Stadium/Sandford-on-Thames junction – and on to the southbound carriageway of the A4074 at about 1.55pm yesterday.

Police spokeswoman Francine Rodrigues said the man then collided with a vehicle.

He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital by ambulance and was in a life-threatening condition, according to South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman Michelle Archer.

The air ambulance was also called to the scene but was not used to take the man to hospital.

Four police cars attended and officers closed off one of the footpaths leading to the bridge.

A resident in Heyford Hill Lane said: “I was going out and saw all of the police there. I heard the ambulances and air ambulance overhead.”

Police said the vehicle involved was a silver Vaxuall Astra and it was seen being recovered from the scene at about 4.30pm.

The southbound carriageway was closed until just after 5pm.

Oxford Bus Company spokesman Phil Ashworth said the X39 and X40 Thames Travel services to the south of the county experienced delays of up to 20 minutes and were diverted in both directions.
