CAMPAIGNERS have urged Oxford City Council to accept their bid to buy Temple Cowley Pools for the community.

A petition organised by the Save Temple Cowley Pools group was submitted to last night’s full meeting of the city council.

The council has put the Temple Road facility up for sale, claiming it is in a poor state of repair and no longer fit for purpose. A replacement multi-million pound pool is currently being built in Blackbird Leys.

But campaign group Save Temple Cowley Pools is attempting to buy the site to keep the pool open.

More than 1,500 people have signed the petition calling for the city council to “accept this bid as offering best value for the community and so keep health, fitness community facilities on this site”.

Under the city council’s constitution, any petition with 1,500 signatures or more has to be debated at a full meeting of council.

The Temple Cowley Pools site has been registered as a community asset to give a community group the chance to buy it.

This protected status ends on October 7 when it will go back on the open market.
