A MAJOR housing development on the edge of Wallingford could push more cars through the town, a county councillor has warned.

A planning application for 555 homes at Slade End Farm has been submitted to South Oxfordshire District Council.

The entrance to the St Edward Homes’ estate will be on the Wallingford bypass, the A4130.

Brightwell-cum-Sotwell Parish Council has said traffic already travels at dangerous speeds on that road and is pushing highways authority Oxfordshire County Council to lower the limit on that stretch to 40mph.

But independent county councillor for Wallingford Lynda Atkins opposed the idea, saying it would lead to impatient drivers diverting through town.

Ms Atkins, also a town councillor, said: “There are bound to be calls for the speed limit close to the junction to be reduced but that could have a harmful knock-on effect for Wallingford.”

Ms Atkins said the estate entrance should be designed for 60mph, and then a 40mph limit could be trialled.

Brightwell parish council leader David Fox said the idea that a lower speed limit would push more cars through Wallingford was “nonsense”.

District council planners are due to make a decision by December 25.
