A NORTH Oxford school has been told by Ofsted inspectors it requires improvement.

St Aloysius’ Catholic Primary School in Woodstock Road was visited by inspectors at the end of October. Ofsted found expectations for pupils with special educational needs were not high enough.

In a report published on Wednesday, Ofsted said: “Teachers’ expectation of what all pupils can achieve are too low. Too much time is wasted during day-to-day lessons when pupils could be stretched and challenged.”

A previous inspection in June 2010 awarded the school a “good” rating.

The latest report also said: “Pupils’ behaviour requires improvement. Some pupils respond too slowly to instructions.

“Not all teachers insist upon pupils’ prompt attention, which wastes time.”

The school was praised for improvements to its early years provision.

Ofsted said: “The Early Years Foundation Stage has improved significantly since the previous inspection and is now good. Children make a good start to their education.”

Headteacher Tom Walker said: “Clearly we are disappointed with the outcome of the recent inspection. Staff, governors and pupils are determined to work to address the issues raised in the report and get the school back to a good rating as soon as possible.

“We are very pleased at the progress made with our early years provision. It’s moved from satisfactory at the last inspection to good.”
