ALL the glitz and glamour of the ballroom was brought to Oxford’s New Theatre on Saturday as couples danced off in the Strictly Oxford competition.

A troupe of 15 local celebrities took to the floor with their professional dance partners to perform a waltz, a jive, and a freestyle dance in the grand setting.

The fourth annual event was in support of Vale House Alzheimer’s hospice, for which the competition has raised £100,000 since 2012.

World ballroom showdance champion dancer Joanne Clifton, who has just completed her first season on television’s Strictly Come Dancing, was on the panel of judges, along with BBC Radio Oxford presenter Bill Heine, Latin dance teacher George Martini and professional dancer Przemek Fokt.

Oxford police commander Superintendent Christian Bunt pulled off the best moves with his professional partner Sally Sheppard, winning the competition.

Frank Webster, 53, who took part to mark 30 years work at Finders Keepers letting agents in Oxford, came second with his dance partner Jane Holmes, and events organiser Simon Daniel and dance partner Stephanie Mitchell came in third. Organiser Mary Carey said of the glitzy event: “Each year has its own personalities and each year gets better and better. It’s fair to say that now they’ve done the event they won’t want to stop dancing.”

Strictly Oxford 2015 producer and Step by Step dance school owner Andrzej Mialkowski added: “It’s a family show and people are chosen from the area and that’s why it’s so popular.”
