POTENTIAL volunteer firefighters can test their skills at two taster days next month.

Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service is holding a number of sessions for people who are interested in becoming an on call firefighter.

It aims to give the public a chance to see what the role entails.

On June 6 there will be a session at Chipping Norton Fire station and another at Goring Fire station on June 13.

Employee relations and resource officer Paul Bremble said: “There will be a talk about the recruitment process and the role, and then a look around the equipment.

“Visitors will also have a go with some of the kit such as the fire equipment on the appliance, cutting equipment, breathing apparatus, ladders, and water rescue equipment.”

He said: “We need more on call fire fighters to ensure that there are always fire appliances available in the county.

“The service recruits people from all professions and all walks of life, whether you work for yourself, are part of a company or manage your family home.”

To become an on call fire fighter you must live or work within five minutes of your local fire station and would have to pass a series of selection tests.

Anyone who attends a taster session should wear trainers and comfortable clothing.
