Seventeen canisters containing an unknown substance have now been removed from a house in Cowley, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

An MoD spokeswoman said the canisters, which had allegedly contaminated soil at an empty house in the street, were removed from the home yesterday.

They had been taken by 621 EOD Squadron Royal Logistic Corps, based at RAF Northolt to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory in Porton Down for analysis.

The spokeswoman said the MoD could not reveal what the unknown substance was until the analysis was complete, and could not provide a timescale for when that might be.

The canisters were discovered after workers at the house discovered evidence of contaminated soil earlier this week.

Thames Valley Police called in the Royal Logistic Corps bomb disposal unit, and the road had been closed since Tuesday.

But it was finally reopened today.
