FOUR men were arrested as Swindon fans clashed with police in Botley Road before Tuesday night’s game against Oxford United.

A 42-year-old from Swindon was held on suspicion of affray and possession of cocaine and bailed until November 9.

A 45-year-old from Calne in Wiltshire was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and released on bail until November 3.

Two more men, aged 47 and 41, from Swindon, were arrested on suspicion of affray and released on bail until November 3 and November 9.

Thames Valley Police arrested a fifth man, 19, from Oldham, and cautioned him for being drunk and disorderly in Didcot in another incident linked to the match.

Fans from both teams confronted each other outside the Kassam Stadium shortly before kick-off and police prevented a large number of supporters gathered near the train station from attending the match because of their behaviour and escorted them from the city.

The build-up to the match was marred by scenes in the city centre. There were some minor scuffles outside One Bar, with Botley Road temporarily closed as Swindon Town fans gathered.

Witnesses reported one man pinned to the ground and arrested by police.

It is believed glasses were thrown as fans shouted abuse and swore at officers.

Oxford United went on to win the game 2-0 courtesy of a Kemar Roofe brace in front of more than 9,000 at the Kassam Stadium.

This is the first time the teams have played each other since the 2012-13 season. Oxford’s win was their fifth in a row against Swindon and passed without further incident.
