THE Sharks and the Jets swapped New York City for Oxford as they did battle on stage in West Side Story.

Students at Matthew Arnold School in Arnolds Way put on their final performance of the musical last night at the end of a three-day run. Rory Coltart and Jake O’Neill took the roles of rivals Riff and Bernardo and Lucy Earl played Maria.

Drama teacher Kerry Brandon, who co-directed the show, said Greg Bowen, who plays Tony, and Lucy had brought tears to the eyes of audiences with their moving voices.

The love story, which is based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, included the hits America, I Feel Pretty and Tonight.

She said: “Their story continues to break hearts with every performance they give.

“We are just so proud of all of the cast and the amazing amount of work they have put in during the rehearsal period. “The show is really something with plenty of goosebump moments.”
