COUNTY council leaders will today consider proposals for a major upgrade to Oxfordshire's rail network and plans to improve air quality in Oxford city centre.

A report to the council's cabinet sets out key changes to Connecting Oxfordshire, the Local Transport Plan.

The plan has now been updated to include proposals for lobbying Network Rail to provide a £75m scheme to improve Oxford rail station by 2024.

According to the draft Oxfordshire Rail Strategy passenger levels have increased by 92 per cent since 2002 and the county cannot wait "another 10 to 15 years for the rail infrastructure it needs to allow more services to reach the city."

Members of the cabinet will ask a full meeting of the council to back the update on Tuesday, July 12.

They are also expected to instruct officers to begin work on proposals for a zero emission zone in Oxford city centre, and this could be in place by 2020.

The meeting takes place at County Hall at 2pm.
