A STREET trader selling Oxford souvenirs will find out today whether he will be allowed to permanently move to Cornmarket Street after losing his spot to the Westgate redevelopment.

John Irvin had been running his stall in Queen Street, selling everything helium balloons to Christmas cards since 1982.

But earlier this year he was forced to move for the construction of the £440m redevelopment of the Westgate Shopping Centre.

Mr Irvin has been trading outside Carphone Warehouse on the corner of Cornmarket Street and Market Street since May but his three-month trial period is up.

Oxford City Council's licensing and registration sub committee will decide on the application later today.

A document put before the committee revealed no complaints had been made against Mr Irvin's stall in the three-month trial period.

The report read: "The trial period at the Market Street location was arranged by the council as a temporary relocation following the redevelopment of the Westgate Shopping Centre.

"The trial consent allowed Mr Irvin to sell greeting cards, balloons, gift wrap, toys and souvenirs as per his original location on Queen Street."

It added: "No complaints have been received during the agreed trial period and Oxfordshire County Council Highways Authority and Thames Valley Police are in support of the twelve month Street Trading Consent being issued ."

A decision will be made by councillors at Town Hall tonight.
