A FATHER-OF-TWO had a seasonal surprise in store for his partner of 12 years at the weekend, getting down on bended knee to ask for her hand in marriage - with Santa as their witness.
Mark Walton, 45, from Long Hanborough, and partner Jane Tompkin had been shopping at Notcutts Garden Centre just outside Nuneham Courtenay with their two children.
At the store's 'winter wonderland' display Santa was in on the act and asked youngsters Vinny, 10, and Scarlett, seven, what they would like for Christmas before directing the same question to their parents.
Mr Walton then got down on one knee and asked Ms Tompkin for her hand in marriage - and got a 'yes' in reply.
The delighted couple have not yet set a date for the wedding but are looking at autumn 2017.
Mr Walton said: “I’ve been wanting to ask Jane to marry me for a very long time but I was just waiting for the right time. I wanted to do something different that she wouldn’t expect.
"Proposing in front of Santa with the kids there was perfect and I’m absolutely elated that she said yes.
“I’d like to thank Santa, his elves and all the staff at Notcutts for keeping the secret and making the proposal happen. My Christmas wish has come true."
Jonathan Tew, Centre Manager at Notcutts Oxford said: “We were delighted to be a part of the festive proposal and we wish Mark and Jane all the best for their engagement.”
