THE organisers of the city's half marathon have reassured residents that 'unavoidable disruption' will be minimal.

Residents had voiced concerns that some would be 'imprisoned' in their homes due to road closures during the event in October.

Virgin Sport's CEO Mary Wittenberg had told the Oxford Mail she was 'open' to the idea of a full marathon eventually but the firm clarified there were no plans for the expansion at the moment.

A spokesman also said the number of bands and DJs along the route would remain the same as last year.

Al Strang, speaking on behalf of Virgin Sport, said: "Our main focus is to promote a healthy community.

"We want to reassure residents in and around Oxford we are taking all precautions to help make sure there will be minimal disruption during the Oxford Half.

"We take the response of the local residents and businesses very seriously and will do everything we can to protect their interests."

A communications letter with information on the access arrangements will be sent out to residents and businesses from September 4.

Alternative parking options will also be drawn up for those affected by parking suspensions on October 8.

But pedestrian access will not be restricted and nor will access for emergency vehicles.
