FORMER Miss England winner Daniella Luan -Timms is urging young women to follow in her footsteps by entering this year’s Miss Oxford competition.
Ms Luan Timms, now a model and mother-of-two, was on the judging panel at last year’s Miss Oxford final and this year has been chosen to organise the contest on behalf of the organisers of the Miss England finals.
Women from cities across the UK compete in the beauty pageant to see who will take the Miss England crown so they can then compete in the Miss World competition.
The 29-year-old, from Waterstock near Oxford, won the Miss Oxford title in 2002 and went on to be crowned Miss England.
As a result, she flew to Nigeria to compete in the Miss World competition, but the trip was marred by political unrest surrounding the proposed death sentence of a Nigerian woman, which was later overturned. The political row caused several contestants to boycott the competition, which still went ahead, and the pageant was eventually switched to London.
Ms Luan-Timms said: “I took part in Miss World and lived to tell the tale. There were exceptional circumstances the year I went out to Nigeria and I don’t think they will ever be repeated.
“On the whole, it was a great experience and if I had the chance to take part again I would.
“I’m delighted to be organising Miss Oxford this year on behalf of the Miss England competition and I would urge as many contestants as possible to enter.”
Once all the entries are in, Miss Luan-Timms will select 20 finalists to take part in the Miss Oxford final, which will be held on June 3, at the Camera Club in St Ebbe’s.
Auditions are expected to take place on April 5 with the closing date for entries about the same time.
Contestants aged 18 to 24 from across Oxfordshire can take part.
Miss England organiser Angie Beasley said: “We are delighted Daniella has agreed to run the Miss Oxford competition for us this year — she is just the right person to do it after winning Miss Oxford and Miss England.”
