SHOPPERS were unexpectedly serenaded by a “flashmob” choir in an Abingdon supermarket.
Crowds gathered in Waitrose’s vegetable aisle as they broke out in song, much to the bemusement of staff who were unware of the group’s plans. Saturday’s stunt was to promote the Abingdon Arts Festival and saw singers belt out The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Down By The Riverside on Saturday.
Singing teacher Julia Thomas said: “It was hilarious! People just stop and think ‘this is quite unusual’ and you see the managers looking a bit nervous. It takes people out of their comfort zone.”
Singer Carol Turner, 66, pictured centre, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed it – the looks on people’s faces were amazing.” The “flashmob” craze sees groups of people suddenly perform in public places, usually singing or dancing.
Abingdon Arts Festival starts on Sunday, April 1.
