Cyclist injured in High Street accident

A cyclist was injured today in a collision with a bus in Oxford High Street.

The accident happened at the junction with Longwall Street at 6.40pm.

Michelle Archer, a spokesman for South Central Ambulance, said: ''A man in his twenties was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital with possible back injuries.

He was treated for non life-threatening injuries.''

Even when I am a passenger on a bus I sometimes close my eyes at that junction as even if cyclists do everything right and obey all the right rules and signals the road as you pass Magdalen College is not really wide enough for a bus and a cycle lane. Hope he's okay, not forgetting the bus driver who probably feels crap about it now too!

It is only surprising this doesn't happen at least 10 times a day considering the way most cyclists treat those traffic lights.

I cycle by there every single day and there is no cycling lane for cyclists that want to go straight to high street (coming from Magdalen College). These accidents are not related to traffic lights as buses only go to high street and never turn right.

there are so many cyclists who come out of longwall against red lights and even narrowly miss pedestrians crossing the road. as someone else mentioned, there really isn't room for the cycle lane along by magdalen college, until the road widens. this incident doesn't surprise me one bit, and i hope others learn from yhis. hope the cyclist and bus driver are ok

Not really that there isn't room for a cycle lane, just that for some reason the council put two six foot wide traffic islands in the narrowest part of the road, forcing traffic towards the cycle lane just when lots of cyclists are trying to overtake after bunching up at the traffic lights.

There is plenty of space, just more inept road design from the geniuses at Oxfordshire Highways.

I witnessed this accident - (although I had my back to it...just heard the bang) and I just wanted to say that I was very impressed at the speed in which the emergency services were on the scene and giving the cyclist medical attention. It was very reassuring that someone was there within minutes. I very much hope he is back to full health soon.

I think the islands are there to help pedestrians cross. There is a big enough pedestrian flow between Chch Meadow, the Botanic Garden and Magdalen College to justify them. I'd love to be able to whizz down a widened road on my bike but recognise the need to help pedestrians cross safely here.

get orf your bike and stand there for ten minutes. Then make your assumption about how many people cross, I will give you a clue, not that many to warrant this danger, it could be 20 yards further down where the road widens.
That's just a matter of opinion. At any rate the road may be wider 20 m further west, but at that point it's widened out into three lanes. Inbound, there is a right filter lane which keeps the Longwall traffic clear of the nearside lane. This nearside lane handles all of the buses from east of Mag Bridge, ie 3/4 of the city's main transport, well over 100 buses per hour. Moving the island would not be without consequence.

The guy involved is a good friend of mine. He has very serious back injuries, but is making a good recovery.
