Sir – Your article Modest lifestyle of man who gave away millions, (August 21) August was a welcome reminder of the extraordinary philanthropy of William Morris, Lord Nuffield.
He founded Nuffield College with a gift of £1m to the University of Oxford in 1937. The college inherited Morris’ home, Nuffield Place, after his death in in 1963 and was able to open the house regularly to the public over many years with the help of the Friends of Nuffield Place.
As time passed it became clear that the house should be preserved for the nation on a permanent basis and it was transferred to the National Trust in 2011. I would like to correct the statement in your article that the Trust bought the house from the college for £600,000. In fact the college sold the house to the Trust for just £1 (which we donated back to them!). The figure you quote is the fund raised by the Trust to improve and manage the property.
