Sir – In response to Mr Ingham-Johnson’s letter in last week’s issue, it’s about time that someone has stated one of the most obvious facts that not all the traffic travelling on the road is going to work in Oxford.

As a driver that uses this road on a regular basis and has need to get on to the A34 (north or south) or the A40 towards the M40 I am forced (due to the size of vehicle I drive) to join all the other frustrated drivers in the long slow trek to get somewhere quicker.

I have full sympathy for all the drivers who are forced to use this abysmal “A” road because they are doing what Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) leader Ian Hudspeth feels is the only use for this road, travelling to Oxford in the morning and back to Witney eight to nine hours later. But let’s not forget anybody that just wants to get through it all.

Why doesn’t OCC waste a few more thousand pounds (A34/M40 north lights, Frideswide Square, London Road Headington, etc...) and just erect a sign, or more than one as it’s only money, letting every driver know that they don’t intend to do anything to sort out the problem anytime soon.

And no, I don’t want to see a dual carriageway that just dumps all two lanes on to the old City Motors roundabout (Yes I am that old to remember that!) I would just like to see a good deal for any user, bike, bus, truck car etc. Is this the only single carriageway road going into Oxford?

Let’s all wait and see who actually benefits from another well thought out scheme...
