Sir – Your correspondent Steve Fisher (Letters, July 16) suggests that our local authority has a covert programme of malevolent synchronization of roadworks around the city to discourage car use.

The truth is even darker and more conspiratorial, as is plain for those who choose to see.

Our city, a rare enclave of liberal thought in the sea of conservatism that is the South-East, has long been a thorn in the side of right-wing governments. As paymaster to the highway authorities, Whitehall has seized this opportunity to render Oxford impotent by imprisoning it in an impenetrable barrier of traffic cones.

Already I hear rumours of the formation of a Citizens’ Relief Committee that will requisition canal barges, cargo bicycles and hot-air balloons so that our heroic proletariat may continue to receive an uninterrupted supply of organic muesli, copies of the Guardian, and materials for the construction of protest banners. Our lifelines may be severed, but we will never surrender.
