Sir – A far more sensible approach to the proposed closure of recycling centres in Oxfordshire would be to install barriers along with cash/card machines at the entrance.
With more than a million visits per year, a nominal fee of £1 per visit would more than cover the requireD savings. Also if they increased the type of items accepted and extended the opening hours they would attract more visitors and help reduce fly-tipping.
This alternative action could be implemented in weeks rather than the months/years that would be involved in closing some centres. You never know correctly managed and promoted they could even become self-financing.
