Sir – I was an undergraduate at Merton College 1965-68.
I was deeply saddened to see the letter from Paul Hornby about the proposed development near Holywell Cemetery (July 23).
I read History. I draw three conclusions. One is that Oxford colleges are remarkably lucky beneficiaries of history, learning, and past and present generosity. They should be scrupulous about their legacy, and avoid desecration and the destruction of the environment.
Secondly, they should honour Oxford’s rich heritage as preserved in the cemetery.
Thirdly, they should learn from history, including recent history, including the fiasco of Roger Dudman Way. I appeal to my college, Merton, to think again, and to look at alternatives.
