Genuine smiles

Sir – I enjoyed Nigel Clarke’s witty response (Letters, January 26) to my letter of January 12 about British and French railways. But he seems to misunderstand the French pricing system when he states that the Avignon-Paris fare “is” £43.50. The prices change from day to day and from train to train depending on perceived demand.

A check on the Internet has just revealed that, at the moment, the peak-time Avignon-Paris first class single fare is £139 first class. I can only comment that Mr Clarke was extremely lucky to find one for £43.50.

The service with a smile I receive from British on-train trolley-pushers can have nothing to do with the quality of the coffee, as I usually have tea; and my wife insists that it cannot be because of my alluring looks. So the smiles must be genuine.

Finally, I wouldn’t be seen dead going to Disneyland!
