Age UK Oxfordshire is looking for volunteers to join its ‘Circles of Support’ Project to help frail and isolated people in the community to remain well and happy at home.

Circles of Support launched in October 2014 to help older people to stay connected, navigate the maze of options and remain in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.

Age UK Oxfordshire believes that people who are helped to stay fit, know what’s on offer, have a sense of purpose and something fun to do are likely to stay active and well for longer.

The project is seeking volunteers to work alongside Age UK Oxfordshire staff and with hospital teams and community health teams in Abingdon, Bicester and Oxford, to support older people who have substantial health needs and who have limited activities and social contact.

They will help to develop ‘circles of support’ around people within their community; to re-establish relationships and activities, and to link into information and opportunities provided by a wide range of voluntary and community organisations.

Ann Nursey, project manager explains: “This is an opportunity to be part of an important and exciting pilot project working alongside the NHS, social care professionals, Age UK Oxfordshire and the Community Information Network, and to make a real difference to the lives of people who are isolated or unwell.”

Irene Taylor is one of the project’s first volunteers: “I was in hospital two years ago, and didn’t know how to find the information my family needed to help me make arrangements for my care when I came home.

“I think it is wonderful that Age UK Oxfordshire is providing volunteers and staff to help people have the information to stay in control of these decisions.”

You don’t need to be an expert to volunteer, training and support will be provided. If you have a few hours to spare during the day each week in Oxford, Abingdon or Bicester, have access to a car,  and would like to know more please contact Ann Nursey, Project Manager on 07584 148 507 or email annnursey@ageukoxfordshire.org.uk

Circles of Support is funded by the Cabinet Office, the National Tripartite Group (NHS England, Monitor, the NHS Trust Development Authority and the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services) and Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group.
