A FORMER A&E nurse who raped and sexually assaulted unconscious patients in a “grotesque breach of trust” has been jailed for 18 years.

Andrew Hutchinson, above, recorded himself abusing his victims at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital and was told he left them feeling disgusted, dirty and violated.

Yesterday prosecutor Matthew Walsh revealed the full extent of the 29-year-old’s crimes, in which he recorded “hundreds, maybe thousands” of hours of footage.

He told a judge at Oxford Crown Court that Hutchinson was first arrested in November 2013 for filming women and girls getting undressed at the White Horse Leisure Centre in Abingdon.

But Mr Walsh said this was “the tip of the iceberg” and police uncovered more serious sexual offences dating back to 2011.

These included raping two unconscious women in the A&E department of the hospital and sexually assaulting two women in a medical tent at the Wilderness Festival, where he was a volunteer in 2013. Police have notified 10 female victims aged between ten and 35-years-old, but said there may be as many as 19 further voyeurism victims who cannot be identified.

Hutchinson has admitted two counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, one count of outraging public decency and 12 counts of voyeurism.

His crimes followed the jailing of 37-year-old nurse Oliver Balicao in 2010 for raping a 17-year-old girl at the same hospital and sexually assaulting another patient in her bed.

And, as reported previously, hospital bosses knew of a complaint of “inappropriate behaviour” by Hutchinson, a senior nurse, made in 2009 but did not refer it to the police after finding there was no evidence. The hospital did tell the police of that complaint during the investigations in 2014 but this only emerged publicly several days after he appeared in court.

Mr Walsh read a statement from one of Hutchinson’s victims, who was raped while she was unconscious and now feels “pure hatred” towards him. In it she said: “It has made me feel dirty and disgusted. He took advantage of me when I was at my most vulnerable. My life has been devastated.”

Another patient, who was a victim of voyeurism, wrote: “I personally think that what he has done is much worse than doing it it in the street, because I had no idea what was happening, and no ability to fight back.”

The barrister added in addition to the offences he was charged with, Hutchinson had been secretly recording women for years, including on escalators, at bus stops, walking along the street and even at the London 2012 Olympics.

Hutchinson, of Garford, near Abingdon, has also pleaded guilty to five counts of making indecent images of children, stealing ketamine and a medical camera from the hospital where he worked, and possession of a Class B drug.

Passing sentence Judge Ian Pringle told Hutchinson he committed a “grotesque breach of trust” and added: “It is impossible to conceive of a greater breach of trust.”

Claire Fraser, defending, said her client wanted to apologise to his victims and hoped his crimes would not have a negative impact on how the public views other nurses.

After the hearing, Catherine Stoddart, chief nurse at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Now the court processes are complete, we will be carrying out a thorough internal review to see if anything could have been done to prevent Andrew Hutchinson from committing these crimes and to recommend any improvements that could be made to either working practices or the physical environment if appropriate.”
