TEACHERS and pupils at a boys’ school have been hailed “excellent” by school inspectors.

The Independent School Inspectorate (ISI) heaped praise on staff at Abingdon School, for offering “excellent governance” in a “caring atmosphere”.

Headteacher Felicity Lusk said the reports were a “tremendous endorsement”.

The private boarding school, in Abingdon’s Park Road, teaches 963 pupils aged 11-18.

Ms Lusk said: “I was delighted, not only by the superb comments from ISI regarding our achievements, teaching and learning but equally by their comments regarding pupils’ pride in their school.”

Almost 90 per cent of GCSE subject passes last year were A* to A grades.

Pupil Darius Oraee, 17, said: “I’ve been really happy here. I’d definitely recommend it not just because it’s good academically but there is so much to do and the activities are really diverse.”

Rather than give an overall rating, the report ranks each area – achievements, personal development and leadership – separately.

Sister institution Abingdon Prep School achieved the highest rating of “exceptional” for its academic achievements.
