DRIVERS in Abingdon have been warned of delays following the start of roadworks.

Signs have been placed on Marcham and Drayton Roads, warning drivers to expect hold-ups from Monday for six weeks but highways authority Oxfordshire County Council said it was not aware of any work taking place for that length of time.

Abingdon taxi driver Colin Dobson, whose Twitter feed @theabingdontaxi has 2,119 followers, said: "People in South Abingdon in particular will be affected by any delays.

"The double roundabout in Spring Road is a real pinch point for drivers trying to get into Abingdon from the Drayton Road so these roadworks will not help and are bound to add to congestion.

"The work should be pushed back until the end of the next week so that all the schools have broken up.

"It would also be much better if the work did not take place during the rush-hour.

"New homes are being built off Drayton Road so it's possible the roadworks are connected with that.

"The signs have now been removed from the Marcham Road but they are still up on the Drayton Road."

Abingdon South county councillor Neil Fawcett said: "I am not aware of any major work planned.

"According to the website roadworks.org, utilities work is due to be carried out in Abingdon Road, Drayton, from Monday until July 29, so it's possible signs which have been seen in Abingdon refer to that."

Oxfordshire County Council spokesman Martin Crabtree said: "There’s nothing on the system, or that we have been notified about, that tallies with the signs."

Thames Water has not yet commented.
