A SCHOOL hopes to demolish a chunk of its border wall to improve access to the head's home.

Abingdon School revealed plans to knock down a stretch of stone wall in Bridge Street, Abingdon, and build a gateway to the head teacher's residency at Lacies Court House.

To level the ground an unused bomb shelter would also be demolished.

An application lodged on Vale of White Horse District Council's website last week said the proposal was "part of a wider plan aimed at reducing vehicular traffic through the main school campus" as cars currently have to drive through the main entrance in Park Road.

The driveway would also be used for construction workers if a future development, to replace old buildings with a three-story education centre, gets council approval.

Plans include intercom-fitted gates set back from the residential road, a gravel drive leading to a turning circle, and a detached double garage complete with a log store.

Justin Hodges, director of finance and operations at the school, said: "Currently there is no garage for the house and vehicular access to the house is through the school."

The house at the private boys' school has been occupied by a headteacher since 1965, including current resident Felicity Lusk.
