Council says sorry over waste fiasco

Council leaders have apologised for the first time for problems caused by the roll out of south Oxfordshire’s new waste collection system.

South Oxfordshire District Council leader Ann Ducker and chief executive David Buckle posted a joint apology on the council’s website and said they hoped all the problems would be resolved by the end of this week.

The new rubbish contract aims to double the amount of waste recycled through weekly food waste collections and alternate weekly collections of recycling and residual waste.

Each home has been issued with two wheelie bins and a smaller kitchen caddy for food waste, or sacks if their home is not suitable for bins.

However, residents have been complaining of disrupted collections and some have still not received their wheelie bins or sacks despite the launch of the new service three weeks ago.

Scores of residents said they have been unable to get through to contractor Verdant on its helpline number 03000 610610.

The message read: “Thank you for your patience. We would like to apologise for the problems that some of our residents are experiencing with the new waste collection arrangements. “Whilst the vast majority of households are receiving the service, there are a few outstanding problems, mainly related to flats and isolated rural properties.

“We are working through these as quickly as we can with Verdant, our contractor, and hope to have all of them resolved by the end of this week.

For a moment I thought - historic moment - Oxford City Council finally acknowledge what useless wasters they are - then I saw- its the District Council. But I can dream, cant I?

Personally I dont think they have much to apologise for. It's a MASSIVE change from the past and there will always be a few who slip through the net, it's human nature after all. And as with most media, you hear about the bad a lot more than you hear about the good.

Usual over-the-top reporting by the Herald.

Headline says it all - why a "fiasco" and not just teething problems?

My mother-in-lives in Berinsfield and due to disability needs assisted collections. They have now failed for the past three weeks to collect her rubbish/recycling/fo
od waste. This results in me having to call the dreaded 'helpline'! to ask them to come and do the collection. My usual wait is 30 minutes for my called to be answered, which is an utter waste of my time. To add insult to injury, the holding message for the past two weeks has told me to expect waiting times of around 10 minutes for my call to be answered. I wish!!

my husband works for verdant the problems with collections is nothing compared to the problems in staffing. men are working many hours overtime but not being paid for them because the men in the offices decided how to run a company without any idea what goes on. putting the managing directors on the front line for a week would maybe solve a lot of the problems !!!

Hi shazzer64. Big thanks to your hubby and his colleagues - I've seen how hard the guys are working to implement this new system - please let him know that majority of us do appreciate the work they do and realise the teething problems are not down to the teams on the front line.

Must be the best workout ever - bet he doesn't need a gym membership!!
