Abingdon School head moving to headship at Shrewsbury School

THE headteacher of Abingdon School has announced he will leave the south Oxfordshire town next year.

Mark Turner said his decision to move was not a sign of keenness to go, but a chance to take on fresh opportunities and challenges at a new school.

From September 2010 Mr Turner will take up the post of headteacher at Shrewsbury School in Shropshire — an independent boys’ school for 13- to 18-year-olds.

The 47-year-old would have been at the Park Road school for eight-and-a-half years when he leaves at the end of 2009/10 academic year.

He said he had written to all current and prospective parents and 4,000 former pupils to announce his departure.

Mr Turner expressed his disappointment of leaving but said that his time at the boys’ school had been wonderful.

David Lillycrop, chairman of the school’s governors, said: “The fact that he is going to such a prestigious appointment reflects well on Abingdon as it clearly does on Mark himself."
