Firefighters said residents in a Banbury house had a lucky escape after a fire started and their smoke alarms were not working.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to a house in Levenot Close at 12.30pm on Saturday after a fire started in a first-floor bedroom.

Two fire engines from Banbury and one from Deddington attended and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used water jets to extinguish it.

A spokesman for the fire service said smoke alarms were fitted in the property but were not working, and it was fortunate the occupants were awake at the time.

The cause of the fire is being investigated and there were no injuries.
