An elderly lady was rescued yesterday afternoon after being trapped under what Thames Valley Police believe was the front wheel of her own car.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call from Thames Valley Police at 3.50pm that a person was trapped under a green Ford Fiesta in Mewburn Road, Banbury.

Crews were on the scene within minutes and were faced with the challenge of rescuing an elderly lady who was pinned by the leg under the front wheel of the car.

Industrial air bags were used to lift the car off the woman while ambulance crews stabilised her condition.

She was then taken by land ambulance to John Radcliffe Hospital.

Fire and Rescue Service incident commander Dave Bray said: “The lady has unfortunately sustained very serious injuries and was removed from the scene by an ambulance directly to the waiting air ambulance, which had landed in Easington Park; the closest safe place that the pilot could land the aircraft.”

The car park was reopened at 7.30pm.

Police are investigating how the incident happened
