TRADERS and shoppers can have their say on plans that could see larger stores stay open longer on Sundays.
Twenty-year-old trading laws that restrict larger stores to being open for no more than six hours – between the hours of 10am and 6pm – could end up being devolved to the local councils.
Local authorities would have greater flexibility and could allow large shops to open for longer.
South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils are set to respond to the Government proposals but want residents’ views first.
South Oxfordshire cabinet member for economic development Robert Simister said: “Devolved powers would be a big change in how Sunday trading works, so it’s very important for us to listen to what people think and ensure our response to government accurately reflects people’s views.”
Vale district council leader Matthew Barber said: “Whether you are a resident who only goes shopping once a week, someone who lives very near to larger shops or a trader who is in direct competition, we want to hear how you may be affected if Sunday trading laws are devolved and we are given powers to make trading hours more flexible.”
