A car passenger had to be freed by the fire service after the vehicle they were travelling in hit a tree near Banbury.

The passenger and driver were both taken to hospital following the incident in the A361 Williamscott Hill yesterday.

Two fire crews from Banbury were sent to the scene at 10.15am and found the car had left the road, collided with a tree and rolled into a nearby field.

Trauma-trained firefighters worked with the ambulance service to treat the injuries of the two people in the vehicle.

The driver was able to walk free unaided but the passenger had to be cut free by fire crews who removed the door of the car.

Firefighters also used axes and saws to cut away a hedgerow and create a safe route to lead the casualties out of the field and to waiting ambulances.

They were then taken to hospital.

Incident commander station manager Steve Anderson from Banbury fire station said: "The cause of this incident is under investigation by the Police, but Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to highlight this collision as a timely reminder to drivers of the importance of wearing seat belts and making sure you concentrate on the road when driving at all times."
